Everyone knows the story of Freddie Mercury and his rock-and-roll life before his tragic passing. Few know the story of one of his greatest loves, Irishman Jim Hutton, who was by his side until he died in 1991. Though they never legally married and kept their relationship out of the public eye, Hutton and Mercury were each other’s life partners. Jim Hutton was Freddie Mercury's live-in boyfriend from 1985 until his death in 1991. Hutton died of lung cancer on New Year's Day, 2010. He and Mercury were never married, but acted as married couples do. He wrote a book about his time with Mercury, which he said helped him grieve. In the film we see Mercury meet his long-term Irish love, Jim Hutton, at a party at his house. Armagh actor Aaron McCusker portrayed Jim Hutton in the movie. However, quite a bit of artistic licence was used in the film and this was not how they actually met. The pair first met in a gay nightclub called Heaven in March 1985.
According to Vanity Fair, Freddy and Jim met at a gay bar called Heaven in London. Freddy offered to buy Jim a drink, and Jim, not recognizing Mercury, turned him down. He course corrected a year and a half later when they ran into each other again, and Hutton soon moved in with Queen's lead singer at his Garden Lodge residence.
That night Freddie made a point of being seen with Mary Austin on his arm. His boyfriend Jim Hutton was nowhere in sight. Freddie could also put on the style himself. At one of his private parties, an army of dwarfs ran around with bowls of the finest cocaine, held shoulder high for the guests.
